Mrs. Catherine Winkler Herman passed away at her home on Lake Barcroft in Falls Church, VA on Thursday evening, June 7, 2007, after a short illness. She was 93 years old. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mark Winkler, and her second husband, Dean Herman. She is survived by three daughters, Tori Thomas of McLean, VA, Kit Wennesland of Boulder, CO and Margaret Hect of Maui, HI; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A native of Wolf Point, MT, she moved to the Washington area to work for the Commerce Department during World War II and later had a career as a psychiatric social worker, before assuming responsibility for her first husband's real estate development business, The Mark Winkler Company, upon his death in 1972. Mrs. Herman lived a life full of love, generosity and charity, founding the Winkler Botanical Preserve, in Alexandria, VA, and the Mark and Catherine Winkler Foundation, which supported the health and educational needs of those with limited resources in the Washington region and beyond for the last thirty years.
