Lauren O’Brien is a senior policy advisor in the public law and policy practice, with more than a decade of legislative and advocacy experience. Ms. O’Brien advises clients on issues relating to tax and health policy, among others. Prior to joining Akin Gump, Ms. O’Brien served as deputy chief of staff and legislative director for former Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY). She has more than seven years of experience as a House staffer. As part of Rep. Davis’ staff, Ms. O’Brien assisted with work relating to the House Financial Services Committee, including efforts that led to the passage of two laws: the Military Personnel Financial Services Protection Act and the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act. Beginning in 2009, Ms. O’Brien oversaw Rep. Davis’ work as a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, including tax, health care and trade issues. She was the key staffer during his tenure as chairman of the Human Resources Subcommittee. Ms. O’Brien also has experience with policy issues relating to appropriations, budget, economy and agriculture. She managed the legislative process for 10 of Rep. Davis’ bills that passed the House, five of which were ultimately signed into law. During her time as a House staffer, Ms. O’Brien was invited to speak on a number of panels for legislative conferences on issues ranging from health care to affordable housing. In addition to her legislative experience, Ms. O’Brien played a key role in communication efforts for the office, including drafting op-eds, speechwriting and expanding its social media presence. Ms. O’Brien has also assisted a number of political campaigns in a volunteer capacity, including Mitch Daniels for governor, Geoff Davis for congress and Team Ohio. Ms. O’Brien received her B.A. magna cum laude from Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame. She currently serves as the networking director of the Saint Mary’s Washington, DC, Alumnae Club.
