A billionaire long believed to have died in a skiing accident may actually be alive and living with a younger woman in Moscow, new evidence has suggested. Karl-Erivan Haub, then 58, vanished on a solo ski tour in the Alps on April 7, 2018. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Haub and brother Christian have headed the company since 2000. The family’s fortune is estimated at over $3.7 billion. Tengelmann's main businesses are the hardware store Obi and clothing retailer KiK. It also has large stakes in the Netto supermarket chain and online retailer Zalando. It once owned a major stake in the now-defunct U.S. supermarket chain A&P. His parents visited Tacoma in the 1950’s and decided to have their children born in the United States. The family donated millions to redevelopment efforts in downtown Tacoma. Their support helped establish UW Tacoma, the Museum of Glass, and the expansion of the Tacoma Art Museum. The Haub Family Galleries at the museum house more than 200 pieces of art from the family’s personal collection. Approximately $20 million in donations paid for the additional wing for the museum. Haub’s father, Erivan Haub, passed away in March.
