George Williams Gibbs IV of St. Augustine died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. George was born in Jacksonville on July 18, 1957. He graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and attended Florida Technical University and the University of North Florida. His passion was sailboat racing and he participated in the America's Cup and was invited to coach an Olympic Sailing Team. He worked most of his life in the marine industry. George is survived by his mother, Catherine Thompson Simmons; his father, George Williams Gibbs III (Ann); his sisters, Catherine Gibbs Juan (Peter) and Ann Gibbs Giampetro, and Elizabeth Stockton Gibbs; and his brothers, Robert Kingsley Gibbs (Melinda), Raymond Douglas Simmons (Terry), and Francis Boll Gibbs (LeAnne); nieces and nephews include Celeste Dodrill, Tucker Juan, Anna Giampetro, Cullen Giampetro, Robert Gibbs, Jr., and John Dodrill. George will be interred at his family's section of Evergreen Cemetery in St. Augustine along with his grandfather, George Williams Gibbs Jr. and his great-grandparents, Kathleen Ingraham Gibbs and George Williams Gibbs, and his great-great-grandparents, Margaret Watkins Gibbs and George Williams Gibbs, and Maria Baker Ingraham and James Edmundson Ingraham, and his great-great-grandparents, Julia Williams Gibbs and George Couper Gibbs, and Elizabeth Coles Watkins and William Joel Watkins. These relatives were all early Florida settlers.
