Scottsdale developer Fred Unger died Saturday January 20 2018 after a seven-year battle with cancer, his family confirmed. The 69-year-old founder and president of Scottsdale-based Spring Creek Development was responsible for many of the city's landmark projects including the Royal Palms Resort, the Hermosa Inn and the canal Waterfront downtown. The Scottsdale entrepreneur established his firm in 1992. His wife Jennifer Unger is the CFO. Spring Creek purchased The Hermosa Inn that same year and restored it as Arizona's only authentic hacienda. The Royal Palms Resort was purchased in 1995 and transformed into a Mediterranean-style villa. Unger's Southbridge project at the Scottsdale Waterfront connects shoppers from Fashion Square and the Waterfront to Old Town. His work changed the atmosphere of what was once a sleepy area of the city. Unger was also active in the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce, the Phoenix Symphony and other community organizations, including the Scottsdale Leadership program. Unger's son, Carter Unger is expected to take his father's place at Scottsdale Forward.
