Jim Schweiter is a member of both the Government Contracts and Government Affairs practice groups in the Washington, DC office. His practice focuses on working with companies inexperienced in dealing with the federal government, as well as assisting established government contractors, in the development and implementation of success oriented government affairs strategies. These strategies involve targeted legislative and regulatory solutions, media strategies, and legal advice about government contracting opportunities and business development. Jim is particularly knowledgeable about the programs and activities of the Departments of Defense, Energy, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs. Prior to joining the firm, Jim served for 15 years in several senior positions with the Committee on Armed Services, U.S. House of Representatives, including counsel, general counsel and minority staff director for the Committee. During this time, he was responsible for formulating and implementing legislative initiatives, media and legislative strategy, and parliamentary procedure related to the annual national defense authorization act and other legislation. Jim served as a liaison to the House leadership, House and Senate committees, the White House, the Department of Defense, industry officials and private sector groups. As minority staff director and counsel, he was the senior professional staff member and legal advisor to the Committee’s ranking Member (now Chairman), Ike Skelton, and the 27 other minority members of the Committee. Jim has also worked in the Pentagon as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. Before working in Congress, Jim spent six years on active duty in the Air Force as a judge advocate. He has also worked as senior counsel for a professional services company and served as the general counsel of the congressional Commission on the National Guard and Reserves. Jim is a recipient of the Department of Defense award for distinguished public service. He serves on the board of advisors of M Cubed Corporation. He is the author of several articles on national security-related topics.
