Andrea Newman is Senior Vice President – Government Affairs for Delta Air Lines with responsibility for federal, state and local government affairs. Andrea has taken a leadership role on behalf of the airline industry, its customers and employees in significant legislative efforts, including efforts in conjunction with industry association Airlines For America (A4A) to establish a National Airline Policy to enable U.S. carriers to compete effectively in the global marketplace. She played a key role in the passage of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, and is leading the U.S. industry’s efforts to level the playing field with foreign airline competitors in the area of aircraft financing by requiring that the Export-Import Bank operate transparently, conduct appropriate economic impact analysis of its loans and loan guarantees to foreign airlines, and restricting the Bank’s lending. Other recent accomplishments include the 2011 regulatory approval of Delta’s historic expansion at New York LaGuardia Airport, which the U.S. Department of Transportation noted has significant benefits for consumers nationwide; the Pension Protection Act of 2006; the Pension Funding Equity Act of 2004; and the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act of 2001. Andrea also was instrumental in the creation of an Airport Authority at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. She helped develop Delta’s global environmental response to climate change. Prior to Delta’s acquisition of Northwest Airlines in October 2008, she was Senior Vice President – Government Affairs for Northwest. Prior to joining Northwest in 1995, Andrea was a senior partner at the Detroit law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock, and Stone. Andrea also served as Special Counsel to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Logistics in 1986 and 1987, and Deputy Assistant to the Vice President of the United States in 1985. Andrea has been an elected member of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan since 1995. She also serves as a Vice President of the Detroit Economic Club and is a member of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. Andrea is a 1983 graduate (J.D.) of the George Washington University National Law Center, and a 1979 honors graduate (B.A.) of the University of Michigan.
