Her father Raeman Sopher worked as a metallurgist, first for the Battelle Memorial Institute, a nonprofit scientific research organization in Columbus, Ohio, and then at General Dynamic’s Electric Boat division in Connecticut. Crea’s mom, a homemaker, had her hands full getting Crea and her two older brothers settled and introduced into a new school each time they moved.
