Hank Barnette

Mr. Barnette is chairman emeritus of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He first joined Bethlehem Steel as an attorney in 1967, and he held the positions of general counsel and secretary, and senior vice president and director before serving as the company’s chairman and CEO from 1992 to 2000. Mr. Barnette was an appointed member of the President’s Trade Advisory Committee, serving from 1989 to 2001 under Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. President Reagan appointed him to the Council of the Administrative Conference of the United States in 1988 and Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole named him to the Coal Commission in 1990. He was appointed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge to the state’s 21st Century Environmental Commission, a position he held from 1997 to 1998. Mr. Barnette is a former director of MetLife, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Owens Corning and was a member of the Norfolk Southern Advisory Board. He is the Comenius Professor and a trustee at Moravian College, a former member of the Business Council, a member of the Council of Retired Chief Executives, a senior adviser to The Conference Board, a member of the Lehigh Valley Partnership and a director and former chairman of the Ron Brown Corporate Leadership Award Board. He is a former trustee of Lehigh University, a member and former chairman of the Board of Governors of West Virginia University, a director and former chairman of the West Virginia University Foundation and a director and chairman of the Yale Law School Fund Board. Mr. Barnette was a director of the National Center for State Courts and is a director of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation. He was a member of the Policy Committee of the Business Roundtable and chairman of both the American and the International Iron and Steel Institutes and the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable. Mr. Barnette has testified before congressional committees and has written, spoken and advised about corporate, litigation, international trade, corporate governance and related matters.
