William J Quirk

William J. Quirk, a beloved law professor, prolific writer, revered intellectual and the most senior active faculty member at the University of South Carolina School of Law, died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014 He graduated from Princeton University in 1956 and received his law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Virginia in 1959. He spent the next 10 years in New York City, first in private practice and then as general counsel to the Department of Buildings and counsel for the Law Department of the City of New York. He returned frequently to his New York City apartment to visit with friends and to attend opera, theater and other cultural events. Despite his love for New York, he was a devoted lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. Born in Orange, N.J., Professor Quirk was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph and Helen Elizabeth Quirk. He is survived by his daughter, Augusta Rembert Quirk; sisters, Ann McPadden and Helen Densmore; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Jeanne Quirk; and cousins, Frank, John, James, and Jane.
