David May

When David May graduated from Furman University in his hometown of Miami, Fla., he knew he wanted to do something that would give him a broad base of business experience. After talking to several people who recommended banking, May applied for and landed a job in 1990 as credit analyst at C&S Bank in St. Petersburg, Fla. The decision was a good one, says May, who went on to increasingly responsible positions at NationsBank and Bank of America and came to Wichita in 2000 as president, commercial banking at Bank of America. “I like getting to know the clients — who they are and what they want to do,” May says. “They all have dreams for themselves and their businesses. Working with them to help provide the financial means to get where they want to go is exciting.” May says his desire to help others is part of a personal value system he learned from his father. “My dad said this since I was young and it always stuck in my head: ‘God, family and work are where you set your priorities,’” May says. “I try to live by that.” May’s devotion to God is manifested through his work as a volunteer Sunday school worker for 2-year-olds at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. He is also devoted to his wife Susan, and their two sons Emery, 4, and Riley, 2. May’s dedication to work also carries over to community service. Since moving to Wichita he has become a board member of the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce, Wichita Downtown Development Corp., United Way of the Plains and the Sedgwick County Zoological Society. “It’s important for the community to be healthy,” May says. “The more healthy and positive we make Wichita for everybody – especially for kids – the more likely it is that they’ll be healthy and positive about the city.”
