Mr. Christopher J. Ailman is the Chief Investment Officer at California State Teachers Employees' Retirement System. Mr. Ailman oversees an investment portfolio valued at approximately $186.4 billion at the firm. He also leads a team of 117 investment staff in the private equity, global equity, corporate governance, fixed income, real estate, operations, innovation, and risk groups. Mr. Ailman joined the firm in 2000. He has more than 27 years of institutional investment management experience. Mr. Ailman previously served as the Chief Investment Officer at the Sacramento Employees Retirement System and the County of Sacramento. He serves on several boards and advisory boards in the U.S. and U.K. Mr. Ailman is a member of the International Corporate Governance Network. He currently serves on the board for the Pacific Pension Institute. Mr. Ailman had earlier served as the Chairman of the institute. He serves on the board of the Emory Center for Alternative Investments at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. Mr. Ailman also represents institutional investors on the MSCI Barra Index Editorial Advisory Board and the EDHEC-Risk Institute. He previously managed the $60 billion Washington State Investment Board, where he led the development of a new investment program for a hybrid defined benefit and defined contribution plan. In 2011, Mr. Ailman received both the Institutional Investor’s "Large Public Fund Manager of the Year" award and aiCIO’s "Innovation Award". He received the "Distinguished Service Award for the Advancement of Latinos in Business" from The New America Alliance in 2006. Mr. Ailman also received the Richard Stoddard Award for service in the investment of public pensions from his CIO peers in 2003. He earned the CIO of the Year Institute of Fiduciary Education Leadership Award in 2000. Mr. Ailman is a Member of the 300 Club. He received the Certified Financial Planner designation from the University of Southern California in 1984. Mr. Ailman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
