Susan began her academic career as a lifer at Friends Seminary in New York City, where she and her mother and brother were members of 15th Street Meeting. She went on to earn a BA in international relations at Brown University and a master’s in international education from The American University, where she minored in teaching English as a second language. Susan tutored many subjects while in high school and college, and began her professional career as an ESL teacher once she moved to Washington, D.C. She taught adults for many years through Montgomery County as well as at a private school in Bethesda, and spent two years teaching ESL at an Alexandria Public Elementary School. Since her daughter started PK at Sidwell Friends in 2005, she has been involved with the Parents Association as a Lower School Quaker Life Committee clerk, Lower School division clerk, Middle School Community Service Committee clerk, and all-school vice-clerk and clerk. She is a member of Bethesda Friends Meeting, where she was active on the Advancement and Outreach Committee and acted as a liaison between the meeting and the Lower School parent community. She and her husband, Alexis, reside in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with Daphne and their dog, Penny Pickles.
