Peter is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Washington, D.C. He specializes in advising clients about all aspects of the federal procurement process, and representing them in disputes with the government. He has particular expertise in defending companies against allegations that they have defrauded the government, and has litigated many such cases brought under the federal False Claims Act. He speaks and writes widely in this area, and in 2008 testified before Congress concerning proposed amendments to the False Claims Act. He also serves as outside counsel to the nonprofit that is responsible for administration of the U.S. National Lab on the International Space Station. Before joining Akin Gump in 2007, Peter was a member of Miller & Chevalier in Washington, where he served on the management committee and chaired the firm’s hiring committee. He began his practice as an associate at Wilmer Cutler & Pickering. In law school at Stanford from 1986 to 1989, Peter served as the senior articles editor of the Stanford Law Review and helped found the now-thriving Stanford Law & Policy Review. While an undergraduate at Yale from 1980 to 1984, Peter majored in English and published several college magazines, including the Yale Scientific Magazine. As a Sidwell Friends lifer, alumnus, and parent, Peter has been involved in many Sidwell Friends activities. He has served as the class agent for the Class of 1980 virtually since graduation. In 1991, he joined the executive board of the Alumni Association; he has served in several roles on that body for many years. In 2002, he served on a task force that provided recommendations concerning alumni fundraising. From 2007 to 2009, he served as the chair of the Fair Share Fund. Peter is actively engaged in pro bono matters, serving as a member of the pro bono committees at both Akin Gump and Miller & Chevalier. For five years, he served on the board of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. He currently provides pro bono advice to the Melwood nonprofit in Maryland. Peter is also active in local Boy Scout and Cub Scout organizations. He is a former chair of Boy Scout Troop 8 in Bethesda, and actively counsels boys on Eagle Scout projects and merit badges. Peter is married to Gretchen Sierra-Zorita, and together they have three children—Peter Benjamin Hutt-Sierra ’15, Carolina Hutt-Sierra ’16, and Oliver Hutt-Sierra ’19
