Born to Irish immigrant parents, graduated from Boston College. Long time partner is Lorrie Higgins. At age 27, elected to serve in Massachusetts House, representing Boston's 13th District (Suffolk). Served there for 16 years. Member/Leader of Laborers Local 223, and served as head of Building and Construction Trades Council of Metropolitan District. Co-founder and former board member of Neighborhood House Public Charter School. Supports public schools. Was strongly supported by organized labor in mayoral race, especially by AFT, as his primary opponent is in favor of corporate education reform (including private charter schools).
