Chicago developer, philanthropist and community leader who as head of JPS Interests was principal or managing partner in the development of more than 5 million square feet of office, commercial and industrial projects. Some of his projects included renovations of the former Covenant Club building at 10 N. Dearborn, a former Peoples Gas building at 122 S. Michigan and the Inland Steel Building at 30 W. Monroe St., which Mr. Sweeney owned for a time around 2000. He grew up in Oak Lawn. After graduating from Brother Rice High School, he studied for a year at the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University before transferring to Northwestern University, from which he graduated with a degree in English and Intellectual History. In addition to his daughter Margaret Sweeney Powell, other survivors include his wife of 43 years, Barbara; his other daughters Rose, Anne, Eleanor and Grace; sons James and Robert; brothers James and Michael; and eight grandchildren.
