Susan E.Alvarado is the principal and founding partner of the Washington, DC government relations consulting firm of Alvarado & Bennett. Ms. Alvarado was the first woman to work for the Senate Republican leadership, as floor assistant to Assistant Minority Leader Ted Stevens, during the years 1976 through 1980. In that capacity, she worked with Senator Stevens on a daily basis, as well as with other Republican senators and the Democratic leadership. Ms. Alvarado then served Vice President George H. W. Bush as his assistant for legislative affairs, coordinating his Capitol Hill office, and serving as his liaison to members of the House and Senate. Since departing the Vice President's staff in 1983, Ms. Alvarado has held a number of positions in the government relations field, and has developed expertise in defense, telecommunications and appropriations issues. Ms. Alvarado received a bachelor's degree in political science from The Ohio State University in 1975 where she was a member of the women's varsity tennis team. Subsequently, Ms. Alvarado was honored with the University's William Oxley Thompson Alumni Award for distinguished achievement in her career, and in 2000 was awarded the First Annual Public Service Award from the International Myeloma Foundation, an award shared with her father, Ricardo R. Alvarado. In 1988, Ms. Alvarado was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the United States Postal Service Board of Governors, a position in which she served for ten years. Currently she serves as Chairman and CEO of the National Postal Forum Board of Directors and is Vice Chairman of the Latino Coalition and a Board member of the Washington Tennis and Educational Foundation.
