After completing a preventive medicine residency at UNC, Marcia became medical officer for the School of Medicine's International Training in Health Program (Intrah). She earned her master's degree in public health from Carolina in 1987 while serving as assistant professor in medicine and medical director of the Orange County Health Department. She is currently an adjunct professor in the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University.
