Geert Greving is a nonresident senior fellow with the Energy Security Initiative in the Foreign Policy program. He is an industrial expert and has been globally active as an engineer, always in relation to the fossil fuel energy sector. Along the energy value chain he has experience as a field engineer, operational jobs from ICT, HRM to Finance, as well as dealing with feasibility studies for new infrastructure around the world (Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Sweden, Croatia, Slovenia Spain and Ireland). He is currently the International Gas Union executive for geopolitics dealing with global energy politics and geopolitics, with a focus on game changers. Within the industrial network, he is active in the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris as well as in International Energy Forum (IEF) in Riyadh. His main focus is EU-Russian energy relations, where he serves at various levels, aiming to bridge the debate gap between governments and industry. Geert started his field engineer carrier at Exxon in the United States in the late 1970’s and then moved back to The Netherlands in 1978 to serve the Dutch Gasunie, a full public-private company consisting of the Dutch state at an equal footing with Exxon Mobil and Shell. Since 2005, following EU unbundling regulations, this company was split into a regulated state-owned company Gasunie (TSO) and a non-regulated wholesale corporation GasTerra, in equal partnership between the State and the oil corporations. Since 2011, Greving has served the International Gas Union at executive level for a key topic: the geopolitics of energy. As head of public affairs he serves for his company in several public functions within the Dutch – Russian trade relations, IEA and IEF. In the field of research, Greving is GasTerra’s coordinator for university activities, as well as coordinator for Ph.D. studies and activities. He has been closely working with the University of Groningen and the recently established Energy Academy Europe in Groningen, which aims to become a leading center for multidisciplinary energy studies in Europe. Geert is also aligned with the energy program of the Clingendael Institute in The Hague as well as the Institute for International Relations in Paris.
