Jody J. Brewster joined Skadden, Arps in 1999 as part of its Washington, D.C. office. Ms. Brewster represents clients during all phases of Internal Revenue Service audits and appeals, in administrative and regulatory proceedings and with regard to tax legislation. Ms. Brewster also has represented groups of companies on issues of industry-wide significance in administrative proceedings before the IRS and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, including companies in the following industries: airline, automotive, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, telecommunications and utilities. Ms. Brewster advises clients on a wide range of subject matters, including capitalization issues; tax accounting issues; depreciation; placed in service issues; accounting method and tax period changes; and compliance with information reporting and withholding rules. Ms. Brewster has been a frequent public speaker with such professional organizations as the American Bar Association, in which she is very active, and the Practising Law Institute. Before joining Skadden, Arps, Ms. Brewster worked 10 years with the IRS’ Office of Chief Counsel. From 1994 to 1999, Ms. Brewster was the assistant chief counsel (Income Tax & Accounting), where she had primary responsibility over a broad range of issues involving tax accounting, income deductions of corporations and individuals, and IRS practice and procedure. From 1992 until 1994, Ms. Brewster served as the deputy assistant chief counsel (Field Service), and from 1989 to 1992, she served as the special assistant to the associate chief counsel (Domestic). Before joining the IRS in 1989, Ms. Brewster worked as a certified public accountant. Ms. Brewster repeatedly has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America. She also was included in Washingtonian Magazine’s 2013 “Best Lawyers” list.
