Alderman Michael R. Zalewski is a life long resident of the 23rd Ward. He was first elected as Alderman of the 23rd Ward in 1995 and is currently serving his 5th term in the Chicago City Council. In his position as Alderman, Zalewski represents a constituency of approximately 58,000 residents, which includes the Archer heights, Garfield Ridge, Clearing, and West Elsdon. Before being elected to the Chicago City Council, Alderman Zalewski served as the Deputy Commissioner; his duties included directing Snow Removal and Refuse Collection throughout the city. Alderman Zalewski was elected President Pro Tempore of the Chicago City Council on October 7, 2009. As President Pro Tempore, Zalewski presided over City Council Proceedings in the absence of Mayor Daley. On June 8, 2011 Alderman Zalewski was appointed as Chairman on the Committee on Aviation which has jurisdiction over matters relating to aviation and airports. He also serves on the Budget and Government Operation, Health and Environmental Protection, Rules and Ethics, Economic, Capital, and Technology Development, Workforce Development and Audit, and Finance Committees. Alderman Zalewski has been married to his wife Millie for 34 years, has a son Michael, daughter-in-law Carrie, granddaughter Reese, grandson Henry, and daughter Melinda.
