Stacey Brandenburg advises clients on a wide range of privacy and data security issues. A veteran of the Federal Trade Commission’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, Stacey regularly assists clients in responding to FTC investigations involving potential violations of Section 5 of the FTC Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). She also counsels clients in preparing for and handling data security breaches. Stacey works closely with e-commerce and brick-and-mortar companies to address emerging issues such as the Internet of Things, online tracking, and COPPA-compliance. She also helps clients to implement sound security and privacy practices and provides compliance training to employees. Before joining the FTC, Stacey practiced at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where she litigated commercial disputes and advised clients on emerging technology law issues. She is currently on the faculty of American University’s Washington College of Law, where she concentrates on privacy issues raised by new technologies, social media, big data, and the constitutional issues relating to government access to information. Stacey received her law degree from the NYU School of Law, where she was a Truman Scholar, and earned her B.A. in political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
