James Emanuel Boasberg is the chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He joined the court in 2011 after being nominated by President Barack Obama (D). Boasberg became chief judge of the court on March 17, 2023. Boasberg was a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 19, 2014. He served as presiding judge from 2020 to 2021. A native of San Francisco, California, Boasberg earned his bachelor's from Yale College in 1985, his M.St. from the University of Oxford in 1986. and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1990. From 1990-1991 he was a law clerk to Dorothy W. Nelson, United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. He was later in private practice in San Francisco and Washington DC before serving t as Assistant US Attorney in Washington DC 1996-2002. He was a Superior Court Judge in Washington FC from 2002 to 2011.
