Mark Butler, one of the founding fathers of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet who led the quirky discount retail chain through a period of rapid expansion, died unexpectedly Sunday November 30 2019 at the age of 61 As the story goes, Mr. Butler along with Mort Bernstein, Oliver “Ollie” Rosenberg and Harry Coverman founded Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and opened their first store in Mechanicsburg on July 29, 1982. Mr. Butler took over as president and CEO in 2003 — after Bernstein stepped down from those roles - and In mid-2015, Ollie’s became a public company. Ollie’s now has 345 stores across 25 states. The chain employs more than 8,000 people.Mr. Butler, who was the company’s last living founder. Butler's entire retail career has been spent building one of the most exciting retail companies in America. Butler was a 2005 Ernst Young "Entrepreneur of the Year" finalist and a featured guest of PCN Profiles of Prominent Pennsylvanians. He was also named to the Board of Directors of NASCAR superstar Kasey Kahne's foundation in 2008. Butler is a co-owner of the Harrisburg Senators Baseball Club; Eastern League double A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Butler resides in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Betty, and three children.
