Nathan Brostrom

Nathan Brostrom was appointed Executive Vice President — Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and interim Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective Sept. 22, 2014. In addition to his previous appointment as Executive Vice President for Business Operations, Brostrom had served as interim CFO at UC Office of the President since April 25, 2014. As CFO, Brostrom will oversee all aspects of financial management at the 10 UC campuses, five medical centers and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. As interim COO, he serves as chief administrative officer for the University of California system, with responsibility over systemwide facility construction and maintenance, real estate management, human resource administration, institutional advancement and information technology support. Brostrom became UC’s Executive Vice President for Business Operations in February 2010. He initially joined the University of California in 2006 as Vice Chancellor for Administration at the Berkeley campus. He was responsible for advising the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost on all budget and resource management, health and human services and fiscal planning matters. He managed the campus's annual operating budget of more than $1.8 billion and was responsible for a division that is the largest provider of services to campus staff and a significant provider of services to UC Berkeley students. Previously, Brostrom spent 10 years as Managing Director and Manager of the Western Region Public Finance group for J.P.Morgan, where he worked on financings totaling more than $100 billion for municipal clients throughout the western United States. He served as lead banker on the $11.3 billion energy bond program for the California Department of Water Resources, the financing that repaid the state general fund for lost revenue from the 2000–01 California energy crisis. Brostrom served as a banker for higher education and cultural institutions including Stanford University, the Getty Trust, the California State University system, the California community college system, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco Ballet and other cultural institutions in the western United States. For more than 10 years, he worked on financings totaling over $4.3 billion for the Regents of the University of California. His experience also includes four years in the office of the California State Treasurer, and additional corporate finance experience at J.P.Morgan Securities and Quarterdeck Investment Partners. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University and holds a master's degree in public and international affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. He and his wife Caitlin live in Berkeley with their six children.
