Deborah LaBelle is an attorney, professor, writer and advocate who focuses on the human rights of people in detention. Her home base is Ann Arbor, Michigan, but her advocacy evidences a commitment that is defined by the highest principles of human rights that transcend national borders. She has been lead counsel in over a dozen class actions that have successfully challenged policies affecting the treatment of incarcerated men, women and juveniles and their families. She has represented clients before the United States Supreme Court and in international forums. Attorney LaBelle is a Senior Soros Justice Fellow and, in addition to her private practice, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Juvenile Life Without Parole Initiative.
