Barton M Biggs

Renowned for accurately predicting important market moves when common wisdom said he was wrong. Over 38 years at Morgan Stanley Mr. Biggs was in the top tier of market strategists, successfully calling the rise of bull markets and the end of the dot-com era. Mr. Biggs left Morgan Stanley in 2003, at age 70, to start a hedge fund, Traxis Partners. He earned a degree in English from Yale in 1955 and a master of business administration from New York University in 1962. He served in the Marine Corps. He began his career at E. F. Hutton in 1962 and left three years later to help found Fairfield Partners, a hedge fund. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1965 as a partner. In 1975 he founded its investment management division. In addition to his son, Mr. Biggs is survived by two daughters, Gretchen G. Biggs and Wende H. Ractliffe, and nine grandchildren.
