Mike Miles was the superintendent of Harrison Schools in Colorado Springs for six years (2006-2012). He is notorious for firing many union teachers and getting rid of their contract. He is a big proponent of pay-for-performance. In 2012-2015, Miles served as a superintendent in Dallas, where he received a large amount of negative press. Under his tenure, there was a 60% principal turnover rate, many of his top officials resigned (one went to jail for bribery), and standardized test scores worsened. Recently he returned to Colorado and opened a charter school in Aurora. He Started Third Future Schools, a consultant company and a board member of A+ Colorado and the Colorado League of Charter Schools. Miles taught for just four years before becoming a principal. After only eleven years in public education, accepted his position as Harrison Superintendent. One of Miles’ main priorities is pay-for-performance. In Dallas, he was criticized for lack of leadership, firing teachers, and ignoring the community. In a blog post, Diane Ravitch noted that under Miles’ tenure in Dallas, “Teacher turnover and flight from DISD reached unprecedented numbers. The atmosphere became so toxic that Miles moved his family back to Colorado, presumably for their safety.” Mike Miles has served the public interest as a soldier, statesman, and educator. A former officer in the Army Ranger Battalion, Miles' military experience includes leading counter terrorism training operations. Miles later served in the U.S. State Department as a Soviet analyst and member of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. He then served as a Diplomat to Poland and Russia at the end of the Cold War, finishing his State Department work as the Special Assistant to the Ambassador to Russia. Miles holds degrees from the United States Military Academy at West Point, the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia University.
