Milton Hershey School has been around for more than 100 years. It began as a dream and vision shared by chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey and his wife, Catherine (Kitty). Unable to have children of their own, Milton and Catherine decided to use their wealth to create a home and a school for orphaned boys called Hershey Industrial School. Milton Hershey School has flourished into a 1,900-student coeducational residential school from low-income families. The school is cost free. Established on November 15, 1909, the first students of what was then called the Hershey Industrial School lived and attended classes in The Homestead, the rural birthplace of Milton Hershey. Here they were provided with a stable home life and a rigorous combination of agricultural, vocational, and academic learning. The Deed of Trust, established in 1909 by Milton S. and Catherine S. Hershey for the purpose of nurturing and educating children in need, identifies a Board of Managers as the governing body. These managers have broad discretion to utilize the Trust assets in accordance with the Deed of Trust in order to ensure the perpetuity of Milton Hershey School
