As the looming public health crisis threatened to overwhelm the capacity of even the most advanced hospital ventilators, Dr. Ku deployed health design thinking. The implementation of this lifesaving skill by clinicians is what he teaches medical students at Thomas Jefferson's Sidney Kimmel Medical School, what he describes in his new book Health Design Thinking, and what he will share with us in his Medicine X | CHANGE Keynote Address. Event Schedule The festivities start at 10 a.m. The conversations begin by revisiting old friends, we will then hear about innovation driven by needs on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Along the way we will hear the voices of patients and end-users of health care. We will consider the importance of health care privacy in our interconnected and online age. As our offline lives become more intertwined with our online identities, how will companies protect us from unwanted health privacy breaches? Young people are struggling most with their mental health and lonliness or isolation are top concerns. Stanford Brainstorm is an academic lab dedicated to mental health innovation and entrepreneurship. The lab is currently working on studying some of these issues and believes it can do so in an ethical and socially responsible manner by designing solutions that are based on scientific evidence, interdisciplinary, integrated inside and outside the traditional healthcare system, and scalable to millions at a time. SESSION DESCRIPTION Online communities bring people with shared health conditions and medical knowledge together with the goal to improve lives. These networks of peer support on social media are a lifeline for many ePatients. Yet, along with these benefits come great risks. Health care organizations have largely failed to embrace community-generated data in an equitable and fair way. Nor have they studied or implemented practical knowledge from these networks in ways that meaningfully improve patient outcomes. Privacy abuse and medical misinformation are also threatening the existence of online peer support networks. Could Learning Health Networks flip this narrative? Might this model offer a respected for patient communities in clinical care? During this session, you will learn about the current threats to patients who engage on social networks. This will guide us to frame the problems we intend to solve.
