Space Understanding and applying space technologies is a major political, economic, industrial and cultural challenge. For more than a half century, Safran has built up expertise in the enabling technologies needed for the design and production of rocket propulsion systems and very-high precision optical components. Access to space in a major part of nations' strategic independence and sovereignty. A key for the European Union and France of course, this objective also guides strategy at ArianeGroup (the 50/50 joint company between Airbus Group and Safran), a partner in the Ariane launcher program since the outset, with support from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the French space agency CNES. More precisely, ArianeGroup is a major player in the space sector, including launch vehicles and missiles. ArianeGroup is the prime contractor on Ariane 5 launcher, - which completed more than 80 consecutive successful launch, breaking Ariane 4's record – and on Ariane 6 launcher – whose first launch is planned for 2020. Furthermore, Safran is a major player in the satellite market, with more than 30 years of experience in chemical and electric propulsion systems for attitude and orbit control. Safran is n°1 in Europe in satellite plasma propulsion systems: satellite applications are increasingly important in our daily lives, from observation and broadcasting, to mobile apps and satellite navigation. Throught its company Safran Reosc, Safran is n°1 worldwide in high-performance space optics.
