Medicine is pattern recognition. It’s our original thesis and it still governs what we do. The effective delivery of care is also pattern recognition or, at least, it should be. If you want expertise in prediction, simply go to where the competition to predict the future is the most fierce, where fortunes are made or lost on the ability to predict patterns in data: financial markets. The intensity of this environment drives the cutting-edge of computation and the ability to learn from complex data, at scale. The macro-eyes approach to working with clinical data was born on a trading desk. Pattern recognition has been at the core of macro-eyes since the beginning. We wanted to take algorithmic thinking from the trading floor and out into the world, to a domain where we would make the most immediate impact. Healthcare is arguably the most information-intensive industry in the world yet doctors and nurses and administrators have no effective way to find the insight they need. When patient data is analyzed, too often the objective is to take a very large group of patients who may have little in common but for a narrowly defined clinical element, measure an “average patient” and then use that average as the model for treating all patients who have the same disease. This approach rarely works well. Not all patients who have multiple sclerosis are the same; some also have hypertension and some have arthritis; some just gave birth to healthy children; some are on an unwieldy regimen of medications; some live far away from a pharmacy. The interventions that lead to optimal outcomes for each of these patients is not what will work for every patient. Every clinic and hospital in the United States collects and stores data that can be used to answer these questions — yet patient-relevant, predictive data is not accessible at the point of care. Physicians can provider better, faster care when they know what’s been tried with like patients Physicians can better determine whether their patient is at risk — and for what — when they know what’s happened with similar patients macro-eyes is the AI company rebuilding the foundations of healthcare to make the delivery of care predictive everywhere. Founded 2013. macro-eyes is the proud recipient twice of Grand Challenges Explorations awards, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
