The goal of the « MesInfos » project THE MESINFOS PROJECT EXPLORES AND IMPLEMENTS THE SELF DATA CONCEPT IN FRANCE What would happen if organisations that gather personal data actually shared those datasets with the individuals concerned? From this starting point, MesInfos has set out to explore what could be a real paradigm shift in the digital economy. We call it Self Data: the collection, use and sharing of personal data by and for individuals, under their complete control and designed to fulfil their own needs and aspirations. The benefits to individuals are endless: improve one’s self-knowledge, evaluate past decisions, make better and more informed choices in the present, share information and collaborate with others, contribute to common endeavours, make life easier… But organisations stand to gain as well, first by restoring trust and loyalty, second by improving the quality of the data that they gather, and lastly, thanks to better, more efficient and more transparent marketplaces that reward the truly competitive ones. HOW DO WE DO THAT? We engage organisations in giving back the data they have on their customers to them, to restore trust and the balance of powers. Since 2012, we explored, we analysed, we experimented (a 300 users experiment, the first of its kind), we collaborated with our international peers (different names other than Self Data circulate: MyData, VRM, Pims Ecosystem, M2B…) we produced knowledge on the usage, the architecture, the challenges of such a paradigm shift in a digital economy which is mostly based on business models such as tracking people and using (or even selling) their data for the sole gain of the company. > In 2018/2019, MesInfos explores the theme « Self Data & Cities ». Three Cities (Greater Lyon, La Rochelle and Nantes Métropole), each inhabited by the ambition to implement Self Data locally, are partners in the project. What if cities took a central role in animating, coordinating, facilitating and promoting Self Data with private, public and civil society actors? See an overview of the project here. > In 2016-2018 the main focus was the Pilot. In 2016-2018, we took actions so that the Self Data scenario would arise from paper and experiments into reality. That’s why we led the MesInfos Pilot – to gather organisations holding personal data, platforms/personal clouds, a territory, and an innovation ecosystem to pave the way for a concrete Self Data world (in which organisations are giving back data to their clients under no time limits). In 2017/2018: - Each of the 2000 testers got a Cozy Cloud (Personal Cloud), thanks to the insurance provider Maif. - Several organisations (insurance, energy and telecom providers to start) transmited the data they have on them directly to each of the Cozy Cloud, under their complete control. - The testers were then able to add more data (photo, calendar, files…) to their Cozy and enjoy services to help them in gaining use value from their data (for instance services to better manage their lives, improve one’s self-knowledge, …). > We are also involved in other endeavours concerning empowerment through personal data: « My Health, My Data » (2015-2017) an experiment focused on health data ; « Dataccess » (2016-2017) to help companies get ready for the new right to portability ; MyData, the international event on Self Data/MyData in Helsinki and now an international NGO MyData Global for which we organize the French Hub « MyData France ». From October 2013 to May 2014, large companies (e.g., banks, an insurance provider, a retailer, a telecommunications giant) agreed to securely, individually share with several hundred of their clients the personal data they gather about them on a daily basis. This experiment was the first of its kind in the world. This report presents its most significant findings. MesInfos Notebook – Executive Summary MesInfos Presentation UK
