STREETWISE AND SAFE (SAS) began in 2009 as an initiative of the Peter Cicchino Youth Project at the Urban Justice Center, in response to an expressed need among homeless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer (LGBTQ) youth. We spun out of the Urban Justice Center as an independent organization in August 2011 in order to better further our goals of developing the leadership of LGBTQ youth. SAS became an independent 501(c)(3) in 2012. We offer leadership development programming for LGBTQ communities, we advocate for systemic changes to policing policies and practices that jeopardize the safety of LGBTQ youth of color and, we engage in movement-building with partners and allies across New York City, New York State and the United States around these issues impacting our lives.
