Cloud Peak Energy Inc. was a coal mining company headquartered in Gillette, WY. It was formed in 2009, as a spin-off from Rio Tinto Energy America (a US subsidiary of the UK and Australian mining giant). Cloud Peak Energy filed for bankruptcy in May 2019, and announced on August 16 of that year that Navajo Transitional Energy Company won the competitive bid to acquire most of Cloud Peak Energy assets in particular its 3 open pit mines in Wyoming and Montana, along with the Sequatchie Valley reclamation project. Documents that became public after the bankruptcy show that the company has funded several organizations that are known for spreading climate change denial and advocating against renewable sources of energy; this revelation refutes the company's former claims that it had no ties to the climate denial movement.
