Notes Patrick Dowd, Ph.D, is the Executive Director of Allies for Children. He joined that organization in late July 2013 as its inaugural executive director. Prior to that, Patrick had been a local elected official for almost a decade. On the Pittsburgh Board of Education, he helped build a strong coalition that ushered in an era of robust education reform that focused on academic excellence and accountability. He later was elected to the Pittsburgh City Council, where he chaired the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, which is responsible for legislation worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Again, he helped build coalitions to advance policies. Before serving as a full-time elected official, he taught high school history and economics. He is the father of five and lives with his family in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood. Patrick moved to Pittsburgh in 1991 to earn his doctorate in History from the University of Pittsburgh.
