||Zoë Baird is CEO and President of the Markle Foundation. She convened Rework America, a national initiative of more than 50 diverse leaders, who offer a bold vision to help Americans thrive in today’s economy. In Ms. Baird’s preface to their collectively authored book, America’s Moment: Creating Opportunity in the Connected Age, she outlines an action agenda to leverage technology and globalization as tools to create new paths for good and meaningful work.As part of Rework America’s agenda, Markle joined with LinkedIn, the state of Colorado, and many other partners to build Skillful, a new skills-based labor market platform. Skillful expands opportunities for Americans without college degrees. It creates transparency around skills needed for fast growing and good paying jobs, access to training and insight into career paths that value people’s skills rather than degrees. Skillful includes online and offline tools to connect middle-skill job seekers with employers and educators so they can find ways to continuously succeed in this rapidly changing economy.
Previously, she led Markle’s efforts to use information technology to reform the intelligence community to meet current threats, and to catalyze improvements in the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care, work that led to passage of major federal laws and transformation of business practice. Prior to her role at Markle, Ms. Baird served as Senior VP and General Counsel at Aetna; as Counselor and Staff Executive at GE; partner at O’Melveny & Myers; and as Associate Counsel to President Carter. She is a board member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and previously the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (1994-2000). She is an honorary trustee of the Brookings Institution and a member of the Aspen Strategy Group. She holds an A.B. Phi Beta Kappa and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
