In August 1989. Uni Group, a new U.S. affiliate of Unicord Company of Bangkok, Thailand, purchased Bumble Bee for $269 million in cash. The transaction marked the first time a Thai company had purchased an American concern of so great a magnitude. Uni Group kept the existing management team at Bumble Bee, and plans were set to open a new canning facility in Santa Fe Springs, California, within six months that would be responsible for accepting tuna loins cleaned in Thailand and shipped there for canning. |
