Notes About the #UpForSchool Campaign More than 10 million people worldwide signed the #UpForSchool petition, which was organised by the A World at School movement. It was the biggest petition for education in history and was a massive global declaration that every child deserves a quality education. It was signed by school students, out-of-school children, parents, business people, youth, university students, community leaders, religious leaders, politicians and many others. In September 2016, the petition was handed over to world leaders who were gathered for the United Nations General Assembly. Singer and campaigner Shakira presented a book containing the signatures to Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education. Since the campaign and petition, considerable progress has been made - including education being at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Education Commission has come up with a bold plan to get every child in school by 2030 and the Education Cannot Wait fund for education in emergencies has been launched. SEPTEMBER 2015 Singer and campaigner Shakira delivers the #UpForSchool petition, with more than 10 million signatures, to the United Nations. A Town Hall event is held in New York to mark the handover. It has been signed by world leaders, celebrities, business leaders, faith groups, communities and young people. AUGUST 2015 Muslim Aid collects two million signatures in countries across the world. Other groups who contributed hugely included World Vision Bangladesh (1.5 million names), BRAC (1.2 million) and Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (one million). JULY 2015 Our Global Youth Ambassadors tells Oslo Education Summit that petition has gathered eight million signatures so far. World leaders gathered in Norway then announced the setting up of the Education Commission and an education in emergencies platform - later to be called the Education Cannot Wait fund. Global Youth Ambassadors from A World at School collect one million signatures - they included one who trekked for 11 days through the Himalayas. JUNE 2015 Angry Birds announce #UpForSchool partnership and launch special tournament game. MAY 2016 The petition reaches the five million names mark.
