Chapter 4: Underpopulated classrooms
The gradual move into new territories brought some of Democracy Prep’s challenges to the surface, but some have been present for years in the network’s home base in Harlem.
Like many “no excuses” charter schools (so named because they accept no excuses for students failing to reach their potential), Democracy Prep has historically struggled to keep all its admitted students enrolled. A 2012 study conducted by public radio station WNYC listed two of the network’s middle schools among New York City’s 10 worst for student attrition. |
