Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America
The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) is a trilateral effort to increase security and enhance prosperity among the United States, Canada, and México through greater cooperation and information sharing. It was established in 2005 and key priorities of the initiative are established by the Leaders of these countries annually. The Departments of Commerce and Homeland Security lead U.S. Government SPP efforts, and the Department of State supports the coordination of some initiative activities. Since 2005, health-focused priorities have included the management of avian and pandemic influenza, North American emergency management, and food and product safety.
The HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) provides leadership and direction for the SPP Health Working Group, which is responsible for 90+ health-related deliverables. These deliverables support: the ability of partner countries to provide mutual assistance to each other during public health emergencies; emergency preparedness planning; information exchange at the policy and technical level; building and enhancing laboratory capacity; and improving product safety.
