Khan Academy Partners with College Board, Boys & Girls Club to Offer Free SAT Prep
Khan Academy is partnering with the College Board and the Boys Girls Club to provide students across the country access to free prep materials beginning with the 2016 SAT.
"This will be far more than just videos; it will be sophisticated, interactive software to give students deep practice and diagnose their gaps," according to Kahn Academy's site.
For no cost to students, Khan Academy will be partnering with the creators of the SAT to design beneficial virtual learning materials created to the test.
"What does this mean? By June 2015, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art learning tools--exercises, software diagnostics and videos--designed by Khan Academy and College Board specifically for the redesigned SAT. Stay tuned," the site said.
On the site, many commenters praised the Academy for its work, but had several questions going forward. Many wondered if the virtual school would consider making test prep for the other popular college entrance exam, the ACT. So far, no word on if they will.
According to NPR, the partnership between College Board and the Academy could very well signal a change in the multimillion dollar college test prep industry.
"[B]oth organizations are working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to make both online and in-person tutoring available at clubs for students who don't have computers, internet access or a supportive or safe place to study," NPR said.
Khan Academy said it intends for the partnership to level the playing field when discussing the achievement gap and provide valuable resources to all regardless of familial income.
"Khan says that data from his organization shows that help from a mentor, teacher, parent or coach helps children absorb the material better. 'That's why we're excited about this partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs. They can have an environment where they can engage, have access to the technology and have mentors and a community that will keep them improving their skills,'" the article said.
