The Big Lift was launched by the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council (PPLC), a coalition of government, education, nonprofit, foundation and business leaders committed to improving the health and well-being of the children and youth in San Mateo County. The PPLC first developed a bill of rights for the children and youth of San Mateo County that was later adopted as a statewide resolution. Then the group turned its attention to making the bill of rights actionable in San Mateo County, focusing on the inflection point of third grade reading proficiency and its link to children’s success. The PPLC named this initiative “The Big Lift.”
