George Overholser is the founder and Chairman of Third Sector Capital Partners, which has become America’s leading practitioner in the new field of Pay for Success and Social Impact Bond financing, with offices in Boston, San Francisco and Washington, DC. His work there has led to hundreds of millions of dollars of innovative social sector financing, all rigorously tied to the achievement of proven social outcomes. As Third Sector’s CEO and Chairman, George has spoken repeatedly at The White House and in testimony on Capitol Hill.
George was previously a senior member of Capital One’s founding management team, where he headed up strategy and oversaw the launch of 20 new businesses as Capital One grew from a staff of 200 to a staff of 15,000. In 1999, he formed North Hill Ventures, a Boston-based venture capital firm that focuses on early-stage financial and marketing technology firms.
In 2003, he founded NFF Capital Partners, which helped 16 high-performing nonprofits secure over $300 million of philanthropic growth capital. The NFF Capital Partners portfolio went on to grow its programmatic output five-fold, while also markedly improving metrics of financial sustainability.
George continues to invest in technology companies, including Vistaprint, Ltd, which grew annual revenues from $10 million to almost $2 billion during his tenure as a Board Director.
George has been chronicled by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The Economist, Business Week, and the New York Times among many other publications; and he has appeared in person as a “case study protagonist” for each of Harvard, Stanford, Sloane, Wharton, University of Virginia and Dartmouth’s MBA programs. George writes frequently on the topic of social sector finance, with recent publications in Stanford’s Social Innovation Review and the San Francisco Federal Reserve’s Community Development Investment Review. He graduated in 1982 from Harvard College with a degree in Physics and in 1987 with an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. |
