Leading Delaware’s Economic Turnaround: During his tenure, according to Gallup, Delaware progressed “from one of the lowest-ranking states (in terms of job creation) in 2008 and 2009 to one of the top-ranking in 2013 and 2014. Delaware holds the distinction of being the only state anywhere along the Eastern seaboard to be in the top 10.” In 2015, Delaware ranked fourth. This improvement reflects Governor Markell’s keen focus on improving an economy that was buffeted by the Great Recession. When he took office, he inherited rapidly rising unemployment and the loss of major employers. As Governor, he visited 2,500 employers. Companies including JP Morgan Chase, Capital One, Baltimore Aircoil, Sallie Mae, Calpine, Sevone, PBF Energy and others relocated to or expanded significantly their operations in Delaware. Positioning Delaware’s Students and Workforce for Success: Markell focused on improving Delaware’s schools and workforce. The results are impressive: thousands more low-income students enrolled in the best early childhood centers, record-high graduation rates (84.4% vs. 79.6% in 2012), more than quadrupling the number of students taking college-level courses in high school and increasing the number of students taking and passing Advanced Placement tests, with 18% having passed at least one AP test with a score of 3 or better compared to 10.6% a decade earlier. During 2016, Markell was named “Policy Leader of the Year” by the National Assn. of State Boards of Education. Under his leadership, Delaware eased regulatory burdens on businesses and increased investment in repairing and improving the state’s roads and bridges. Engaging the Media Markell appeared dozens of times on Morning Joe, Squawk Box, Bloomberg, CNN, Fox News Sunday and Crossfire. He has been quoted extensively in major publications.
