Michael D Garvey

Michael Garvey was born in Seattle and received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Washington in 1961 and a J.D. in 1964. He is the retired chairman and a founder of Saltchuk Resources, a privately-held holding company, principally of maritime transportation businesses, specializing in inter-coastal freight transportation. Mr. Garvey was also a founding partner of Garvey Schubert Barer, one of the largest law firms in the Puget Sound area. He practiced private law at the firm from 1965–1988. Mr. Garvey is a board member of the Commerce Bank of Washington, N.A., and SeaBear Company. He previously served on the boards of several companies, including Ste. Michelle Vintners, Hazleton Laboratories Corporation, K-2 Ski Company, Columbia River Farms Corporation, Vernell’s Fine Candies and Ugland International Holdings. Mr. Garvey is also a member of the UW Medicine Campaign Initiative Committee’s executive council and the Burke Museum Association’s Advisory Council. He is a former board chair of the UW Medicine Board, former chair of the UW Business School Advisory Board, and a former member of the UW Foundation and E-Business advisory boards, the Campaign for Washington Major Gifts Committee and the Campaign for Washington Leadership Committee. Mr. Garvey received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the UW School of Law in 1992, and he was named the Fritzky Chair in Leadership at the Foster School of Business in 2005. In 2011, Mr. Garvey and his wife, Lynn, were given the Gates Volunteer Service Award; in addition, Mr. Garvey received the Timeless Award from the UW College of Arts and Sciences.
