Ruff has served as chairman of TowPath Partners LLC since its founding in 2005. He founded the private equity firm Galway Partners in 1995 and served as chairman until 2005. He was a partner with the Washington, D.C., office of Sidley Austin LLP from 1984 to 1995, where he served on the firm’s executive committee. Prior to that, Ruff was an associate and then a partner with the Washington, D.C., law firm of Cohen & Uretz for 15 years. He also served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, teaching advanced courses in corporate taxation and ethics from 1978 to 1996. From 1966 to 1969, Ruff served active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of captain and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and the American Bar Associate Award for Professional Merit. Ruff received his JD with honors from Harvard Law School in 1966 and his BA with honors in English from Vanderbilt University in 1963. He is a member of the state bar associations of the District of Columbia and the State of Mississippi. Ruff is a member of the Deans Advisory Board of Harvard Law School and the board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Ruff is the father of Delia Fant Gallo ’93 , James S. Fant, and Henry Fant ’20. He lives with his wife, Susan, and Henry in Washington, D.C.
