East Maui Irrigation

Ownership: Formerly a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, EMI was transferred to 100% ownership by Mahi Pono in June 2025. Purpose: Operates a gravity-fed ditch system built between 1876 and 1923, supplying water to agricultural users and over 35,000 Upcountry Maui residents. Operations: Collects water from East Maui streams to supply irrigation for farming in Central Maui and water for the Department of Water Supply. Infrastructure: The system includes 388 separate intakes, 24 miles of ditches, and 50 miles of tunnels, along with various pipes and flumes, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources - Hawaii (.gov).
