Learning together to meet the challenges of our times “Climate change, biodiversity collapse, conflicts, widespread inequalities and predatory commercial practices threaten the health and future of children in every countries”. A Future for the World’s Children, OMS, UNICEF, The Lancet Commission, February 2020 An open ecosystem Given the magnitude of the challenges, an open source approach is essential. No single organization has the power to gather, curate, combine, promote and scale all necessary approaches to solve our shared challenges. We need to build together an open source ecosystem where everyone is empowered to contribute and share content, build tools, help curate resources, train fellow educators and celebrate their meaningful learning experiences. In doing so, we can leverage the greater power of the collective, and speed up discussion, replication and evolution of best educational practices. Education & Collective Problem-Solving Education alone cannot achieve a more sustainable future. However, education represents the most powerful, systemic and massive lever to transform societies. Youth are full of energy, ideas, and hope for the future. They are also angry at the state of the world. In higher education alone, there are more than 200 million students worldwide waiting to be invited to co-design a more sustainable and healthy future. Collaborative problem solving is a necessary skill to address complex challenges. From schools to universities, and online platforms to learning cities, thousands of initiatives are flourishing to help learners tackle local and global issues. They develop skills for collaborative problem solving such as critical thinking, collaboration, collective intelligence, creativity, learning by doing, social & emotional intelligence, reflexivity, systemic approaches, change management, frugal innovation, etc. An Open Alliance that cultivates the art of collaboration CRI and UNESCO launched the #LearningPlanet initiative on 24 January 2020, the International Day of Education, with the mission to "Inspire & empower learners of all ages to contribute to better futures”. Aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, that can serve as a framework to engage in meaningful projects and work towards a better future, #LearningPlanet focuses on SDG 4: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all”, the key lever to achieve a profound transformation of our societies in the coming years. LearningPlanet is an open alliance bringing together under a shared banner educational stakeholders from around the world to disseminate the best ideas, on a local and global scale, for helping learners to collectively address the unprecedented challenges of our time. LearningPlanet defines itself as a middle-ground connecting institutions, and their ability to deploy and manage, with grassroots movements and innovators to scale up their ideas. As such, with the spirit of attentive gardeners, LearningPlanet is developing a range of innovative approaches to: create, map and disseminate collective problem-solving pedagogies; develop partnerships with local spaces, regional hubs and online communities; participate in on-the-ground educational projects; design and implement digital solutions supporting open and participatory research, innovative learning strategies and the sharing of resources; orchestrate global and local events to celebrate learning and nurture a culture of hope and engagement.
