Independent Expenditure Committee
In the 2014 Newark mayoral election, Newark First was chiefly funded by Education Reform Now, a New York City-based group and is a major advocate of privately run charter schools. It supported former assistant state Attorney General Shavar Jeffries and opposed Councilman Ras Baraka, who won the election.
